How Will the Transition to All-IP Impact Alarm Signalling?

As the UK and other countries prepare for the complete switch-off of the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) by 2025, businesses and homeowners need to be aware of its impact on their alarm systems. The transition to an all-IP (Internet Protocol) network will bring about significant changes, especially for those relying on traditional landlines for alarm monitoring and communication.

While most businesses and homeowners are aware that their phone systems will need upgrading, many are still unaware of the broader impact on other essential systems that depend on these phone lines. This includes:

  • intruder alarms

  • fire alarms

  • panic alarms

  • access control systems

All of which will be affected once the PSTN is decommissioned.

Alarm signalling, a key feature of security systems, ensures that when an alarm is triggered, a signal is immediately sent to an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC). ARC's respond by contacting emergency services or notifying keyholders. However, without a reliable communication network, these signals cannot reach the ARC, leaving properties vulnerable in the event of a security breach, fire, or emergency.

Currently, many alarm systems use traditional landlines to transmit these critical signals. With the switch to all-IP, systems that haven’t been upgraded will no longer be able to send alerts, rendering them ineffective. Fortunately, not all systems require complete replacement. Some modern security systems can be adapted to function with IP networks or may already use cellular communication, which will continue to operate as long as mobile coverage is strong.

While the transition may seem daunting, it brings benefits, including faster and more reliable IP networks that allow for advanced features like real-time video transmission. Upgrading your systems now ensures compliance and enhances overall security performance.

At MYNET, we are here to support you through this transition. We specialize in helping businesses and homeowners assess and upgrade their alarm systems to ensure a smooth shift to an all-IP network. Whether you need to switch to IP-based alarm signalling or integrate cellular communication, we can assist you in maintaining the security and protection of your property.
